Don’t love me only because I give you joy
Laughter that takes away your pain, your troubles and your woes
Kindness that you don’t get elsewhere
Or softness with my every caress
 
Don’t love me only when I listen
Understand your every whim and care
Know you like the palm of my hand
Attend to your needs without you saying a word
 
Don’t love me only because I love you
With my every breath, move and heart beat
Undying, unrelenting, forever and more
But love me even when I’m sad
 
I need you when I am weakened
I need your steadfast strength
I need your quiet reassurance
I need your gentle smile
 
I need your warm embrace, not your anger
I need your understanding, not your snob
I need you to listen, not block me out
So please just love me, even when I’m sad
